Chickens & bantams together?
« on: July 22, 2013, 16:19 »
Hi, I have 2 cream legbars now 13 weeks old, I would ideally like 2 bantams ( a silkie & light Sussex if possible) to go with them. I know there are various opinions on keeping chickens & bantams together. If I were to add bantams to them at this age the size should be similar (if I get older bantams presumably) but then the bantams would probably have to go on growers until the legbars go to layers (& what age is best or when they start to lay) so, if anyone can make sense of my questions & offer any advice I would be grateful!  :D thanks

I have both large fowl and bantam together, the bantams are just the bottom of the pecking order.  They don't tend to want to sleep with the big girls in the coop though.  Some sleep in the rafters of the walk in run, some sleep on a small table despite having an empty classic eglu they could use!   ::)

You can have bantams laying at 16 weeks which I have had this year, but my last years hatch missed laying before winter so they were nearly a year old when they started.  You can keep your young birds on growers until they start to lay so you should be alright with that plan.  They will need layers as soon as they start to lay though.

I too have both together with no problems  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

I have both too, bantams first and then silkies, the silkies have only just started to mix with the other girls and I think that since going broody and having to sit in the coop with them!

My silkies didn't lay until around 8 months old!

All seems well now and I never see any fighting or pecking between the girls, just the two boys, but my silkie boy is so soft he runs away (fortunately!)
