Huge Lettuce
« on: June 05, 2013, 11:14 »
Any ideas what variety this lettuce might be and whether I need to pull it or I can cut the leaves?
I inherited with the polytunnel bed.

I included one of my size 9 for scaling purposes

cheers

No idea but I wouldn't mind a harvest of them. Are you sure it's a lettuce.

I'm not 100% certain, but it looks like lettuce and a piece of leaf torn off tasted like lettuce.

I'm hopeless at successional sowing. You can see the mixed salad bowl to the rear left and the little gems aren't far off being ready to the rear right. I'll have a glut of lettuce and then nothing ::) I must sow some more ASAP.

I made hubby's lunch today and squashed a whole lettuce in two sandwiches. Shame to waste it.  we have the lettuce glut right now.  I am ignoring his texts about lunchtime.

Could be a good call. It looks very similar. Thanks MOS.

I agree!  Have a look at this - its looks exactly the same.....http://www.realseeds.co.uk/lettuce.html Have look at the Australian Yellowleaf under the 'open head' lettuce section.

Yes. I think the Australian Yellow Leaf looks almost identical

I've gotta try the Black seeded simpson though. It sounds fantastic.

I've got huge lettuces but my favourites are the Yugoslavian Reds.
They are a round lettuce but with firm leaf stalks and the colour and taste are wonderful! Colour graduates from yellow in the middle to lime green then dark green with an amazingly pretty pink splodgy pattern.
I sowed late last year and put the small plants under a cloche over winter, taking it off after that cold snap in March/April.
They went nuts and I'm loving the masses of leaves they're producing but they're starting to bolt now.
Really pretty though.....
