Hi! Last spring, in our first 'lottie' year, we planted onion sets.  We were told that this was easier and if you grew from seed you wouldn't get an 'actual' onion to eat until the following year.  Now, after reading lots of threads on here and studying my veg bible (John Harrison's, of course) I think this is a load of rubbish!
I posted on here last night about growing in a netted tunnel and had loads of great ideas, including onions.  I've had a look at various onion seed packets and they say sow outdoors March/April.  Given the cold spring we've had would it be too late to sow some onion seeds now?  Cheers!

I think it's partly to do with day length, not just temps.

Spot on. Once we get to the longest day Onions start to bulb up. So the size of the plant at that time will determine how big the bulb becomes.

Ah thanks Yorkie/Yorky.  That has made all the different info and 'advice' that we've been all come together and make sense.  For future reference I guess you need to get the seeds in, off and growing in time for the clocks changing and the longer days from mid march? Thanks you so much
