Yes it would work - but tall peas are 6ft or more tall  a frame that tall, covered with debris netting would easily blow over on a windy day  :(

I remember growing CofE up a bedframe a few years ago, so they should be alright on a wigwam. I'll just have to keep the twine handy. :D

I sow my sugarsnap peas in a circle and support them with a circle of long canes - I tie in short pieces of cane about half way up to keep them spaced and help them support each other, and then bang a hardwood stake into the ground alongside one of them and tie it to the stake. Horizontal plastic twine is added for the peas to hang on to as they grow.

Seems to work better than when I tried to grow them in straight rows, which had many of the properties of a spinaker when the peas reached their full height of 7'!

I surround my pea-circle with a ring of trellis netting which is enough to deter the pigeons - not sure whether Salmo's pigeons are unusually athletic or whether he is somehow providing perches for them, but I've not found them to be a problem once the plants get beyond the height of a pigeon at full stretch.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I think I can picture this, but not sure - do you have a photo of this setup?

It amazes me how many different ways people support their peas.

Unfortunately not, as I have yet to sow my peas this year!

The short horizontal canes cross the diameter of the circle so each one is tied to two of the upright canes (helps if you've got an even number of them!!) The hardwood stake directly supports only one of the canes, but because it's attached to the others the whole thing stays upright and strong (or has for the last few years I've been doing it!)   ::)

I do like the idea of a circular structure as our plot is quite open and I would worry the whole lot could indeed turn into a giant sail/spinnaker and take off up the bristol channel!  I grew dwarf varieties of peas last year with great success using DD's method.  This year I am giving tall peas a go - Alderman and Champion of England.  I know these are probably really silly questions  ::) but I'll be brave and ask anyway! How many peas would you sow per cane and would they go inside or outside of the cane circle?

There's nothing critical about this arrangement (it doesn't even have to be round - square or oblong would be just as good - it's avoiding creating a long 7' high "sail" that's important and having at least one strong stake to anchor it all.)

The peas are sown at the normal spacing - they attach themselves using their tendrils to the horizontal strings you provide between the canes because they can't climb like runner beans do.

I put the canes just inside the circle of peas to encourage them to grow outside rather than inside the "cage."  ;)

Thank you once again JayG (you helped me with Munty frame advice earlier this week).  I am definitely doing this at the weekend when it WILL be sunny and NOT windy!!!
