I'll say at the outset, that as much as I grow peas in large quantities, I'm not an over-winter expert.

Feltham First is one of the recommended varieties, but it is getting a little bit late.

Whilst I'm a great lover of peas, (especially straight out of the pod), I'm yet to be convinced that it's worth growing them over winter, with the inherent risk of losses, just to have them a few weeks earlier than some sown in March/April.

But nothing stopping you trying!

Sorry for late reply, but instead of sitting in front of the PC, I was actually having quite a productive digging session on the plot!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Ive put about 6 in a pot in my back garden just to see what happens. If it works then Ill overwinter more in containers next year. I dont think Id overwinter any in my plot though, because of those pesky meecies and birds

I planted some 2 weeks ago

Soaked them a few hours then put them in paper pots inside. They were up within a couple of days and I stuck them outside in my plastic "greenhouse" (bubble wrap around the sides) as soon as they poked their heads out. They are now about 1.5 inches.

I'm probably doing it all wrong but it's nice to have green stuff now instead of months to wait

You can try now but the soil is probably too cold for germination. If you have cloches, a sheltered spot and light soil you might get away with it.

If you have a greenhouse or frame you could plant some in lengths of spouting to be planted out in the spring.

Otherwise put cloches or black sheeting over the plot in early February to warm the soil and plant mid February onwards depending on the weather.
