When to plant out peas.
« on: April 23, 2013, 10:28 »
I have two lots of tall peas (Champion of England and the other I forget for the moment), groing in modules in the cold greenhouse. They are three or four inches high. Now the Early Onward sown direct outside is a couple of inches high now. Can I plant out these module grown plants yet?

I planted mangetout on Sunday, with a bit of netting over to stop the pigeons eating the tops  ::)

The Telephone tall peas may get planted today, if not - then tomorrow;)

Next trip to the plot then, Saturday :D Thanks Mum ;)

Incidentally, how do you support yours? I was thinking of a bamboo cane wigwam as CofE are supposed to grow 6ft plus.

My lot went in last week and the week before that, with my ridiculous pea frame my husband made me, all five foot high. Lol I think he misheard me when I said a pea frame as he seems to have gone for a bean frame. Also netted to stop those pesky pigeons

I grow them on a row of crossed canes kind of like runner beans, but a shorter row - with canes further apart, cos I drop netting down the middle - a wigwam would work but get very congested at the top  ;)

I grow CoE as my first choice.   I used the row of crossed canes like Mum, but I put the pea netting up one side. (I grow runners up the other side of the frame.  The peas happily grow to the top, 6 ' high, then fold themselves over and a couple of foot dangles down.   The only maintenance is occasionally lashing armfuls of foliage back to the canes using big loops of my favorite cheapo washing line. CoE are not great hangers-on by themselves.

Just need to find out how to beat the pea moth weevil - without insecticide.
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

I know that this year it wasn't possible but sowing (and therefore harvesting) early is the best way of avoiding the pea moth.

Just need to find out how to beat the pea moth weevil - without insecticide.

Pea moth lays its eggs at the base of flower buds just before they open. Caterpillars bore their way into the tiny pods.

Cover the crop with enviromesh as soon as you see the first flower buds. It can be removed once flowering is over.

Now can you tell me how to protect tall peas from pigeons?

I was hoping to build a reasonably steady support (something like DD's famous design) and sling some scaffold netting over the top to keep pigeons at bay, and maybe the pea moth too.

I presume this would be ok  ???

I didn't protect them at all last year and did well, but that was in my sheltered garden rather than on the allotment.
