When to plant out onion seedlings
« on: April 12, 2013, 10:30 »
I decided to have a go at growing onions from seed this year. They have been in trays in the greenhouse for a few weeks now and have reached the 4 inch high grass stage. How do I know when they are ready to plant out into the plot? - weather permitting!! :(

Grateful for any advice.

Regards WG

Wait until they have developed 2 side leaves. They should then be robust enough to transplant.

Mine were sown middle of February. They have sat in a cold frame not doing a lot and they have a second leaf. With warmer weather I would expect them to develop quite quickly now. Probably plant out in a couple of weeks.

Better to be patient than plant too soon. Too small and they may sulk or even give up when they are transplanted.

Thanks for that. I'll give them a bit longer.
