egg production down
« on: July 25, 2012, 10:44 »
I have had 5 hens since last October and had been getting 4 eggs a day since shortly after they stopped laying. We were given 4 chickens in April to rear and they were introduced to the other 5 some time ago. Some of them have now started to lay but the older hen egg production has dropped off. Some days I get 5 eggs from the whole flock of9 but other days it can be only 3 or 4.
I would think it is too early in the year for them to stop laying.
Can anyone shed some light on this.
You will never find time for anything. If you want time you must make it.

Has there been any disruption?
Mine go off laying every time something changes even if it is for the better , something very simple like my horses moving in to the field next to theirs.
Also are they running with a cockerel? It is mating season and if the cockerel is to persistent it may be effecting their laying?

the weather can also have an effect although 4 of mine are broody so that is why my girls production is down  :(
Staffies are softer than you think.

Has there been any disruption?
I guess adding new birds to the flock could be classed as a disruption ;)

All 3 of our usual reliable layers have stopped in the last month or so, with the odd single egg here and there, we even had to buy some eggs off a friend who also has chucks, the first time we have brought eggs in about 10 years!!!!

I'm putting it down to old age they are between 3 and 4 years old, added with the combination of the weather??

I guess we  may well have to look into getting some more point of lay in if things dont improve (which to be fair I'm not expecting them to)

Mine are the same. I have 5 pure breeds and a Welsummer cockerel. The Ancona hasnt laid for over a week  but she is showing no signs of discomfort. Now the Cream Legbar has stopped too.  Recently I have had to move the coop from one end of the field to the other but they free range. I put them on pellets with flubenvet for a week too.  The farmer has put cows in the field next to us which 'rub' against the fence and the cockerel wont leave the girls alone at the moment.  He 'trod' the legbar twice in 10mins this morning so god knows what he is up to when Im not there.  Plus the weather has been so changeable .  I hope Im not making excuses  but I cant see anything else wrong with my girls.
