Isn't it amazing what poo can do???
« on: July 11, 2012, 15:42 »
When I finally got the polytunnel sorted out for my tomatoes.  Brian dumped 4 wheelbarrow full of chicken manure on one side for me.  As it was left for a week, it went quite hard, so I only chucked a bit onto the other side before he rotovated it in for me.

Tomatoes went in at the same time, they were the same age and roughly the same size.  They are all Brian's moneymakers, but look at the difference!!!   Poo and no poo!!

Gives real meaning to the old term 'suck it up' , doesn't it?

I didn't realize I'd dumped a bit too much chicken poo in one of my garden rows and decided to let the self-seeded borage grow there. Dratted stuff is 4 ft high now and I've had to hack down most of it so my toms will grow!  :D

Lol RW, of course, don't you vacuum your greenhouse then?

Brian left it in there from when he was using my tunnel as storage last year!

Blimey, thats incredible :) I feel so sorry for the other lot:lol:

I've grown money maker this year, free packet on a magazine, are they ok, they dont get a very good write up on the forum.
I dont like fresh tomatoes but thought they would do for OH or chutney.  OH's mother will only grow and has always grown money maker  so he will say they are delicious what ever :D

I thought that tomatoes need potash, not nitrogen. I will try this though as the results are proof it works.

This is my first year with moneymaker for a long time Spana, but OH asked for them especially as he said he gets fed up with my 'funny' tomatoes!

They aren't as full of flavour as some tomatoes though, but still better than supermarket ones!

Don't know about that Hubballi, but OH always says the best tomatoes he ever tasted was when his friend worked at a local sewage works.  Tomato seeds stay whole when we swallow them, and they used to grow all over the sewage works.  His friend used to pick all the tomatoes and give them out around the village!

It wasn't intentional, believe me.   :D But cake decorators 'candy' borage and call them violets since violets are so difficult to candy and don't produce very much flowers.
Someone I know dries the flowers for medicinal uses, so I must ask about it. The bees are over the moon with so many flowers everywhere. They really love it so I have to be very careful around the borage.

I grew moneymaker one year and must admit I wasn't thrilled with it. Give me sungolds and paste tomatoes any day.

Lots of poo gives really healthy plant growth, but I always add some kelp, BFB, powdered lime and a bit of veg fertilizer to every planting hole as well to cover all needed nutrient bases. I also dust the plant roots with mycohirrizal bacteria at planting time. Really gives the plants a good kick in the pants  ;) It's always obvious which plants got the myco and which I missed/forgot. Oh, and don't believe the expiry dates on the container. I've been using the same large bucket for over 5 years now and it's still working well.

My grandfather used to go to the sewage works and collect free tomato plants. But none of us would do that these days considering the horrid stuff that people flush down toilets and sewers.
