Tomatoes - Too cold to leave outside overnight?
« on: May 13, 2012, 19:21 »
I have a few tom plants in pots which are about 3' tall and healthy, showing the first truss buds. Is it safe at this stage to leave them outside overnight where temperatures tend to fal to 5° - 6° C at the moment. When mature plants in autumn my toms had no trouble coping with that range of temperatue.

At those temperatures, they may well sulk & stall.

They will find it difficult to get going again.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

So how warm do you think it should be before it is OK to leave them out? Would be helpful to have some idea - thanks.

Depending where you live a ground frost is a possibility this week.

Tomatoes need a minimum temperature of 10C to function properly.

I'm still fleecing the ones in the greenhouse - I'm not even thinking about planting outside yet.

Just watch your forecasts till it's warm enough.....It seems cold for May, this year  :(

Thank you.

Luckily I am blessed with an OH who doesn't mind the glass roofed kitchen extension turning into a greenhouse extension... pretty much indefinitely this year, so it seems.
