strawberry runners
« on: May 13, 2012, 20:12 »
my strawberry plants are growing the second year, from 10 plants I now have almost 50 plants. they just started flowering, but in the same time, the runners come again, which are not required.

Can I just nip them off? will nipping-off forces the plants to grow more berries or hurt them from growing?

Thanks
Rain at night, sunshine all day long!

It won't hurt them at all by snipping off the runners. The energy will go into the main plant and hopefully more fruit!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks, I pulled a few but hesitated after.

now I will try to spot them and cut off all of them.

I heard that a strawberry plant's life is 2 or 3 years. then new plants are needed to keep up the crop.

So, Is that correct that I only need to keep the runners every 2/3 years to keep my plants fresh and energitic.

They reckon on about 3 years, but you can get a bit more mileage out of them.

The problem with saving your runners only every few years is that you suddenly end up with only immature plants.

I'm making a new row every year, I've now got three, next year there will be four and once the old ones get unproductive they can come out, but I will still have mature plants.

Thanks DD.

I can see there is new/old plants rotation here. I will try to follow that.
