I note, in the main, that it's only the folk "darn sarf" that are doing it.

Like me, you mean

First earlies went in today, but they are well down and fleece is at the ready for when they show through, in case i don't have time to earth up, or the earth has been used up earthing up, if you see what I mean  :D

well ditto and ditto except I did mine Friday  8)
some people are like slinkys......they're really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face as you push them down the stairs!!

My 1st & 2nd Earlies have gone in. Its a risk but one that has paid off every year of the five that I have had my Lottie.

I agree with DD.  My first and second earlies, planted around now, got singed by frost last year, despite protection following a frost warning.  The affect on the yield wasn't huge and only hit 2 tubers, but it was noticeable that these had a lower yield.

I will be planting a bit later this year.

Had a big frost last night. When would be the best time for second earlies?

I always plant them all at the same time, just not yet..

Mine have been chitting for 3 weeks now. The chits are about ¼ inch long. Am I OK to wait a little while longer?

Yes! (They'd probably still be OK in a few months time, not that I'm suggesting you should wait that long!)  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Its all about personnel choice. My 1st & 2nd earlies are in now as are 90% of the plotters on our site. The ones who say you should wait will not be caught out if we have any late frosts but will have a later crop. Those of us who have our spuds already in the ground are taking a risk but will probably get an earlier crop.

There are no clear right or wrongs with this one. I have set my 1st & 2nd earlies in March every year for the past 5 and have never had any problems. On the whole the past is a good guide to the future, but a guide is all that it is.

It was such a nice day on Saturday that I put in 6 rows of spuds - earlies and maincrop. I had planned to wait until the end of the month but got a bit carried away. I will get some fleece sorted ready for when they pop up. :nowink:

Planted mine on Sat and not "darn sarf" but living on a peninsula reduces the risk.

I planted 4 Pentland Javelin at the weekend, with the plan being to plant 4 every weekend until the two rows are full. Hopefully we'll be able to eat baby potatoes all summer that way. I'm going to leave the maincrops a few more weeks as they'll be on the allotment rather than at home and I can't get down there at a moments notice to earth them up if a frost is forecast.

earlies in the garden yesterday, so fleece will be handy when/if required.
2nds in at the plot today, theoretically 2nds are slower growing  ;)
