Welsummers and Wyandottes
« on: January 21, 2012, 22:17 »
Hi Everyone,

Could someone please tell me about the personalities, tendencies, etc. of these two breeds of chickens?  I am considering enlarging my flock of three hens this Spring and am considering getting these.  I have a Columbian Black Tail, Black Rock and a Light Sussex.
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

I have a Welsummer  :D She is a bit shrieky at times to be honest. My girls are 200 feet at the bottom of the garden, but she sees me coming and is keen to get into the garden out of their run  ::)

I've read that they don't like being confined. She's beautiful, so I forgive her a bit of noise  ;)

P.s I would love a Wyandotte one day  :)

We have 3 Welsummer's as part of a mixed flock and they are more highly strung than some of our others and don't like to be picked up or handled. Ours free range and seem to like this although they are a bit flighty. Lovely looking chickens and lay lovely brown eggs.

Hope this might help

These are some of the best birds you can get Welsummers will lay lots of eggs in the summer and lay a dark brown egg and are very relaxed birds however have been known to like to know whats going on all the time (: Wyandottes are good little birds very round but will not lay many and go broody alot, but both breeds are very nice freindly birds.

We have two silver laced Wyandottes - have not laid an egg in months and we have never managed to pick them up except when they were broody in the nesting box.  Very pretty birds and the two of them are joined by the hip almost and expect when one starts laying again - if ever !! the other one will follow.  When they are apart they will call to each other ...very sweet but not much good for egg supply.
Dogs were born with three legs and a spare.

So definitely if I get Wyandottes, I should probably get two!  There's just Hubby and me, so eggs are not an issue - I just want eggs!  We nick named our Light Sussex 'Gobby Girl' because she's all mouth  ::)  The Calderranger (Columbian Black Tail) has a personality like a Warren.  A real social character!  So I don't think the nervousness and flightiness will bother us much.  Just don't want them getting picked on.

Would probably be a good idea to get a pair as ours are always on the edge of our gang of three rhode island red /light sussex - never seem to be in with the crowd.  Don't know if all Wyandottes are like ours though ! :nowink:
