Is there any mileage in buying a few normal packets of things you like and then swapping or sharing them with others?  Why not check with other growers and decide between you which varieties to try and share the seeds?.......

That would be where I would like to be, but in my case I've only had the allotment a fortnight and I've only met 2 neighbours.  :(  (& there's no association)

Toiling through 100sq metres of clay - And I don't actually eat much veg!

Unless you swap them on here, using the swap shop and recycle board:

Another thing I'd hope to do when I actually have any seeds to swap  :)

Last year I bought loads of half price seeds at the garden centre in the January sales.  Almost all germinated really well and we had pretty good crops... If money's tight (and isn't it just!) you get a lot of seeds for a small price and many will last a second season if you look carefully on the use by dates!
Good luck!

I use moreveg.co.uk when I just want to try something.

Nice business if you can get it. 50p for 12 Cavolo Nero seeds that are being sold on Ebay at 99p for a 1000. 50p for 100 White Lisbon seeds; £1.10 for 2000 on Ebay.
Any day above ground is a good day.

I`ve not ordered from moreveg but I`ve checked them out and for things like calabrese and sweetcorn they are very competitive for small numbers of seed. But I agree that for what I would call "ordinary" seeds like onions and carrots that usually have high numbers of seeds, then better value can be obtained elsewhere.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

Hi  sorry I am abit late coming in on this topic but I buy most of my seed from these people. http://www.simplyseed.co.uk/
I find that there portion size is quite resonable and there prices are cheap , they also only charge 99p. for P&P no matter how large or small your order. They are also very quick on delivery (usually next day).

alanromans.com are cheap, usually smaller quantities, but not the greatest selection.

Never had a problem with their germination rates though.

One that I found good when I first started veggie gardening was Lidl, Netto etc.
Seeds are reasonably priced about 40p a packet and I have always had really good germination rates. Obviously not the widest range but normally a good mix if you get there soon enough.
Son loves it as he can buy things to plant and have half a dozen packets for a couple of quid rather than one from the garden centre.

Another source I use is Thompson and Morgan! Not the cheapest by far but with careful use of their vouchers and promotions you can get some bargains and try different varieties.
This morning had 2 packets of white lady runner beans, packet of sungold tomato, packet of flyaway carrot and packet of true and tender parsnip seeds pop through the letterbox. Total spend £2.11! :D
Sure this is true of other suppliers too.

I now buy ALL my seeds off ebay, the quality is excellent. Used to use the "big" names in the pretty packets up to 3 years ago bought some off to major players the quality was shocking. Non uniform plants (obviously different varieties in the same pack. In one pack of little gem lettuce not 1 germinated, the replacement pack not much better, got some from ebay still using them still germinating well. would not go back.
