I've just read the procedure and I can't believe you were brave enough to do it yourself?  Do you have a background in nursing?  I would have been shaking like a leaf so well done you for helping out your chicken yourself and carrying out the surgery.  You should be very proud of yourself.

I did have a stiff drink first :) I was nervous, but it was either me,or spending a fortune at a vets-which is ludicrous these days.I was worried whilst doing it,mainly because there was so much of it,after it was done it was a sigh of relief to say the least! Thank you for your kind response :)

Missie, you are a star and she is looking great.

I also now know what a impacted crop looks like and scaly mite as they were brilliantly clear pictures.

Just fingers crossed I don't end up having to do the operation, does not look like fun.

Best wishes

I had to do that operation once and it was awful - we had been massaging her crop with oil every day but it wasn't working so we tried live maggots which didn't work either. I looked at her one morning before work and just decided that it was now or never, I needed to do the operation. I was on my own in the house which was a good thing because it would have been very easy to talk me out of it! What I pulled out was a putrid mass of long grass, chopped cabbage and (yup) dead maggots! Yuck. My elderly neighbour has a habit of leaning over the fence and chucking in things he thinks they'll like - I found a charcoal biscuit in the run once - and I think that's how it started.

Anyway, the operation was a success and she was fine. Me though, I was nearly sick and I was still shaking when I got to work two hours later. Sadly no stiff drink for me, I had to teach people.

You've done a great job with her, and I would have done the same as you from start to finish. I couldn't see a hen in that state and walk on by either :)

Well done bexybeck, hope I would be brave enough to tackle it if the need arose.
