Pumpkin help - purple stem and rotted fruit
« on: July 14, 2010, 10:44 »
My pumpkin had two fruits yesterday. One about a fist size and another baby one about an inch big. The smaller pumpkin had now rotted. it easily came off the plant and the fruit became yellow and brownish in spots (rot).
I also noticed that the main stem became purple in color. is this something to worry about?  :(
thanks!

It sounds as if the pumpkins weren't pollinated.  You can do this by hand to make sure it happens.  Mine took a while for the male and female flowers to open at the same time and a few baby pumpkins have withered and dropped off.  Not sure about the purple stem, might just be natural, but keep an eye on it.

hmm, first time growing pumpkin and my fruit was fist sized when it rotted and dropped off.  I was surprised, I thought polination had worked.  Clearly not!  Getting a bit late on in the season for anything magical to happen to this one.  Wonder if it's been the strange weather here in the south east.

Sometimes larger fruit gets slightly damaged and the rots inside without it being noticed. I had a six inch fruit drop off yesterday and it had previously looked fine, just a bit pale coloured.

Underneath it had been munched by a slug so the damaged skin had let moisture in  :tongue2: :tongue2:
