split stem on pumpkin
« on: July 13, 2010, 14:48 »
Hi, I have a pumpkin with a vine about 5ft long and  pumpkins on it, today I noticed that the stem has split for about 6 inches near where it enters the ground. Do you think that I should cut the vine off and hope that there will be another vine form with fruit on it? or leave it and hope that the fruit swells and ripens?

That also happenned to two of mine soon after I planted them out. They seem fine so far, and are starting to fruit.  I earth then up at the base to protect the split part.

If they're anything like courgettes I think it's a pretty common problem. Hasn't affected my nizza courgette at all - it's throwing fruit out like there's no tomorrow.

Thankyou for your replies, I am glad that I did not cut off the vine which was my 1st thought. I will just leave it and see how it goes. CC

one of my butternuts split its stem almost right across the week after planting.
I 'mended' it with a sticking plaster and it has been fine

Very useful sticking plasters  :D  Fixed the trunk of our contotred hazel that broke when Mr Sunny dropped the clothes pole on it, using a pink plaster and year later it is as good as new  :D :D :D :D
