I've noticed one of my tomato canes near the base has a vertical split within it about an inch long. You can see daylight through it, but it doesn't seem to have affected the plant which continues to grow normally.I've wrapped some twine around the split to prevent any fungal infection entering the split.

Anybody had this problem, and will my plant survive or am I likely to experience problems later on?

It happens quite often, especially with bush tomatoes with a heavy load of fruit.

The stems often survive despite only being partially attached but of course a better solution is to provide support before it happens.
