broody hen & eggs in the incy question
« on: June 03, 2011, 20:26 »
OK then I have a hen that went broody a couple of days ago and loads of eggs in my incy that are due Mon/Tues.

The question is could I pop a few of the eggs in the incy under the broody?  Would she be happy that she has only sat for a few days or would she just kill them?

last year I had a broody who hatched chicks in a field, bought them back then abandoned them thinking her job was done. One of my other hens who was broody (only for 1 week)and I had been trying to break her broodiness was still broody so whilst she was in the nest box I slid the chicks next to her - worked a treat.

This year two broodies hatched chicks and one of the broodies has stolen all of the chicks so I have now moved the chickless hen into another house and just placed some chicks with her that Grannie Annie has hatched in her incubator for me. She seems keen but the chicks are wary of this big bird. They are in the dark so hopefully it will work out.

If you hen is really broody then yes slide the eggs under her (or just a couple so you don't risk them all) - then keep your fingers crossed  :)

Well I have put 4 duck eggs under her that have been in the incy and are due to hatch in 9 days. I will keep you all updated on what happens!

It would probably work as far as adoption is concerned though broodies aren't as consistent as incys so you could lose a few particularly as they are at a critical time close to hatch.  Your broody needs to be in the tight sitting phase of broodiness they can be a bit restless at the start.

She is coming off the eggs twice a day at the moment so I am not particulary worried.
