Can chickens eat yogurt?
« on: May 05, 2011, 21:06 »
Hi peeps I have 6 low fat smart price yogurts that are out of date by a week. I'm sure they are ok to eat but was just gonna see if the chickens would eat them. then I thought better ask first  :)

I give my girls it every now and then as a treat and they love it although it does make quite a mess, very amusing though :D

You'll find conflicting info on here!  Some feed yoghurt regularly.  Others say chickens are lactose intolerant and it's bad for them.  Personally I add a spoonful of unsweetened yoghurt to my girls' mash every week or so.

I would say 6 yoghurts sounds like a lot!  I have no idea what size jars you're talking about so my mind is boggling!

A sudden change in the diet can have all sorts of consequences (especially runny poos if they aren't used to digesting dairy products).  My suggestion would be to try them on (for example) a tablespoon per chicken added to a mash and see what happens.

You could freeze the rest in suitable quantities and just bring it out when needed, in small batches.

I feed it occasioanlly - they love it mixed with a little couscous - it is great entertainment as it goes everywhere then they start pecking it off each other - and you if you don't stand well enough back!

If these are flavoured yogurt they will be laced with sugar and personally I wouldn't feed them.  If they are natural yogurt you could feed them but I don't know why you would want to.

I have two chickens with pooey bottoms, others are ok. Having cleaned one up it was bad again the next day. So for the first time in 6 years of hen keeping I fed some pre/pro biotic natural yoghurt over about 5 days in the hope it will sort out their digestive systems by rebalancing the gut. I will then wash bottoms again and see if it reoccurs. Personally I wouldn't feed yoghurt as a matter of course and definitely not a fruit one. :)

if you wish for your girls to have a prebiotic and probiotic - to help unwell tums or after antibiotics etc then you can buy a powder called Avipro plus which has no lactose - it can be mixed with water for a drink or sprinkled in their food. It has bacteria enzymes, vitamins and electrolytes  :)

From a food safety/food poisoning perspective they will be fine as there is a large safety margin on the date - for chooks or humans.
