Coca Cola
« on: July 31, 2006, 12:10 »
I read something today in one of my mags, but i'm not sure if it's true or not, this is due to the mag that it was in,     ZOO. :?  :?:  :?:

It sad that to give a plant a bit of a pirking up, give it a quarter of a can of Coca Cola. :o    :?

I'm just wondering if it is worth giving it to my melons and toms (ETC).

Have any of you guys heard of this, i know people give their plants beer.

I've heard of putting soda, generally lemonade or other clear soda, in vases of cut flowers. The sugar keeps the flowers going for longer than straight water. I doubt it'd help plants much, though, since they make their own sugars in their leaves so I'm not sure if they'd be able to take up the sugar from their roots. Coke's kind of acidic so maybe it'd work better than tap water on ericacious (lime-hating) plants if you have no access to rain water, which is soft.
wistfully hoping to one day be mostly organic gardener in North London.

I feel the whole basis of what I, personally, am trying to achieve by having an allotment would be totally undermined if I used Coca Cola in any way, shape or form.  :!:

I'm with Mick.  Have you seen a list of E's on can of cola.

Comfrey Tea would be far better for them.

I'm with both of you!

Seriously, if you want to give things a perk-up, then use the right stuff - make your own comfrey tea (many posts on here how) or buy a bottle of tomato feed so you can feed regularly.  The cost would probably work out the same but the end result for the soil would probably be better! :D
Keep the plot cultivated, that's the best way to ensure its future.

You can often find tomato feed in poundshops, hardly expensive. I'm very anti Coca Cola since I heard the radio 4 documentory on Kerula in India.
Delivering your toxic waste to local farmers and telling them it is fertiliser - disgusting hardly starts to define it. (Sorry, getting political. Must calm down)

Whilst not discounting some of the previous comments on Coca Cola are you aware it was originally produced as a hangover cure!

If the plants need "perking Up" it makes me wonder what else you've been giving them to drink ?
Ah well ! There is always next year !

I've nothing much against the drink, although I'm not a great coke drinker - just the actions of a rapacious multi-national I'm against.  Like most huge companies the profit motive overwhelms morality.

I'm with John on this one, the unscrupulous mehtods used by mulit-nationals to turn a profit - I wouldn't be suprised if a zealous  Coke employee didn't send that bit to the Zoo web site.

Besides, I'd think that all that sticky sugar on the ground would only invite a host of bug types to ruin your day!!! :(
Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture you can change a person's life.
