hops
« on: March 21, 2011, 17:45 »
Unsure if this post should be in veg or beer making or here?

I have been offered some hops for my garden. Any idea where I start with them or even if i should accept them? What will I be letting myself in for?

Be a first rate version of yourself, not a second rate version of someone else.

Depends on the hop, if theyre one of the classic brewing hops (challenger, fuggles goldings target etc) grab 'em as they're getting steadily more expensive to buy from hops suppliers. Even if you're not into brewing they make nice decorations and hop pillows. They have a rep for growing wild (i saw masses of wild hops on the banks on the Norfolk Broads) and taking over but i can honestly say that it doesnt take much to keep on top of them. Just take the best 3-4 bines and train them either vertically if you have the height or along a fence etc. You'll probably get a crown or rhizome which can be split and potted or planted in good draining soil or compost, they eventually need a lot of watering when they develop all that lush foliage.

They are lovely plants but they grow really tall and their roots are really tough so difficult to remove.
I would advise planting where it won't matter if it spreads....as spread it will.........

echo the comments about it spreading also try to have it in a sunny spot where it can be trained after they have been planted they dont take much looking after just a spot of water if its dry and some manure at the end of the season should do them fine

I have a golden hop in my garden, very little care required just water and feed . It looks stunning in summer.
