ahah - glass cutting is summat I know about.....
THE secret is to have a BRAND new cutter, borrowing an old one off someone is a big nono.... it MAY appear to scribe ok but believe me it wont be any good.....  If the glass is shearing off the cut line its a sure sign of a blunt cutter. Dont be a cheap skate, buy a new one.....!!

scribe the glass as previously described FIRMLY in one direction ONCE only,(and i mean once only DONT scribe back and forth several times thinking you are making sure, the glass will shear off for sure)  then gently TAP the REAR of the scribe line (the underside of the glass) with the metal end of the glass cutter, the glass should gradually shear along the line as you progressively tap along the line from one edge to the other.  Putting a pencil under the glass and using pressure to snap the glass can be a bit hit and miss, if you prefer this method its better putting a thin lathe of wood the width of the cut so that its being supported the whole length of the cut.

Dead easy once you have the knack,

get your self a glass cutter nothing fancy one of those 6 wheeled ones about £3 will do fine, make sure your glass is clean, you will need a straight edge like a T square etc.

On a flat surface line up your straight edge push down firmly with your glass cutter and draw it along the straight edge.

You should end up with a solid score line going from one end to the other, now put a pencil under the score line and press down on the glass on both sides at the same time needs a fair amount of pressure or you can position the score line over the edge of the table and snap it over the edge.

Just like cutting tiles really you can use a permanent marker to mark out your cuts if you wish, once you can do it, it really is easy. Just a bit of practice

AND DON'T FORGET SAFETY GOGGLES AND GLOVES

Too add to RR7 tips, a glass chap I know always recommends dipping your cutter in parrafin before scoring it. Never tried it as he cuts it for me
