I often give stuff away to friends and work colleagues, and in exchange I ask for things like empty jam & pickle jars, or the loo rolls for sowings, and I also have a compostable bin in the common room (just a small bathroom flip top bin so not intrusive) where people put their tea bags, coffee grains & fruit peelings/cores which I then take away & put in my compost bins.  As a result, folk often ask me if I'm interested in anything they think might be useful such as bits of wood, tubing etc before they throw it away.  I've managed to acquire a couple of cupboards for the shed that way  :D

What people don't realise is that gyo produce is not really free - compost, manure, seeds, any pots & seed trays etc all cost money, not to mention your time no matter how much you enjoy it.  I don't think it is unreasonable to ask for a small donation if people have approached you and said they are willing to pay - by all means have a honesty box and 20p per courgette sounds about right to give folks an idea of how much they ought to put in the box giving them the option to add more if they want to  ;)

I usually just give stuff away, this is my first lotty year though and my gluts will (I hope) be bigger than the ones I had from just the garden!).  (Courgettes are already in overdrive and keeping several families fed).
In the past I've put an honesty pot out and ask for donations for my favourite charity. It's quite surprising how much I can collect!  I will probably do this again this year.

Completely OT but for the last couple of years the kids and I have made snow sculptures in the front garden.  We get a lot of people walking past our house taking pictures of them, so this year I equipped one of the snowmen with a charity pot and he collected a fair bit for a local charity!

 :)

Lotty holder since Aug 09... I've FINALLY finished clearing it! On with the p.lanting  ....

My excess goes down to church coffee mornings, (for their funds, not mine).

I never price things up, just leave a dish for donations.

Got £500 last year, I think people a more generous if you don't ask a specific price for things.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

some people are like slinkys......they're really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face as you push them down the stairs!!

Do you really think my peas make it to coffee morning?

They're very lucky to make it home from the plot!
