Courgette's
« on: April 13, 2009, 17:18 »
Hi all... I was given a small Courgette plant by my brother yesterday after I mentioned that I was thinking about growing them.
I haven't even tried to grow these before... so I have a few qustions if I may...
Are there any special needs for courgette's to be grown successfully?
Can they be grown outdoors as well as indoors?
What should they be fed?
Can they be planted in a bucket and kept in the greenhouse?
Thanks as always....

Mine go outdoors, on a mound, with lots of well rotted manure.  Later I water them with tomato feed.  I've never grown any in a pot or greenhouse.

Mine always go outside and do really well but think it's a bit early for them yet as they are pretty cold sensitive.
I just plant mine outside under a cloche, will be doing it soon.

Lots of friends to get rid of the excess to.

Plant out (after frost), water , stand well back.  I think its safe to say you'll be picking 3-4 a week per plant (depending on variety). I've still got some in the freezer from last year and I only grew 2 plants.

Later I water them with tomato feed.

You must REALLY like them Ice, by the end of the year Im usually begging them to die.

It's a poor plant that only does 3-4 per week!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

We have grown courgettes in tyrepile containers and harvested loads last year - we had to bribe the kids to take them home in the end. Fed every week with Tomorite. Keep them inside for now though - I haven't even planted mine yet . Will do next week

I do like them, but like you, by the end of the season I am willing them to die.

I am growing this for the first time this year, well really I am growing everything for the first time this year!

Really looking forward to a 'glut' as I love giving things away!

Sure I saw someone had grown Courgette in old tyres last year?  Anyone any experience of this?

problem is - you turn your back for 5 mins and you haven't got a courgette, you've got a largette. Go away for a weekend and you've got marrows

All  I got last year was powdery mildew - killed every courgette and every pumpkin.... :(  my little one "helping" to water them every five minutes probably didn't help I suppose....?
