Fruit Bushes, Strawberries and Rhubarb
« on: January 29, 2010, 10:03 »
I have decided to move all my fruit to my second smaller allotment so they can all be together and was just wondering if it is to early to move them yet.  Also when can I split my rhubarb seeing as a friend would like some?

Thank you.
40 hens, 8 cockerels, 3 dogs, 2 rabbits, 8 chinchillas, 2 teenage daughters and O/H

I would of thought you can move the soft fruit before they start to grow, rhubarb maybe different, mine has sprouted, I would leave it until the end of the growing season, however on fruit I ma no expert.

Rhubarb is not a fruit. :tongue2:

I'd risk moving it, it's difficult to get rid of!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'm having a similar dilemma, if you don't mind me butting in.....
I'm moving house in a couple of months and I've put my name down on a waiting list for an allotment close by. I've been told it could be about a year, which is fine because I will keep going with the one I've got already for now... problem is, before I knew about the move, I bought 3 blackcurrant bushes - SO - do I try to keep them in pots until the new plot becomes available, or should I just plant them on my current allotment and move them when I get my new one? Which would the currant bushes prefer I wonder?

Thanks for the advice so far.

Aidy there is no growth on my rhubarb yet so do you think it is worth the risk.  What about my rather large strawberry bed?

You could move it all now as long as you don't replant in wet claggy soil.
If you think about it, this is the fruit plant buying season.

Thats coz I live in the tropics (despite what DD says, he only comes in the rainy season) The only time I transplanted rhubarb I pretty much killed it, well as good as, from when I transplanted it went to seed every year so I always leave put now. Strawberrys should be ok still, i have moved them at all times without any problems.

Black currants are shallow rooted, so as long as you dig up a nice sized rootball you can plant it out then dig up again, or leave in pots watered often.

Rhubarb can still be moved if its only started to put out buds, but do take a large rootball of soil with it so it'll keep growing. Look for loads of leftover roots because its hard to get rid of.
