Making Compost
« on: December 10, 2009, 14:42 »
Being a good citizen i recycle all the kitchen waste in a composter, it seems to take a never ending supply of waste, but never gets full!!. However what I would like to know is- I am a trout fisherman and when I catch I bring the fish home and gut and dress them ready for the table with some nice veg from the garden. I am therefore left with the head, tail and other remains of the fish. Can I put these remains into the composter????

In theory, yes, anything organic can be composted. Trouble is the smell of rotting flesh attracts vermin if composted in the normal way on a heap. An alternative method is a Rotter, it is a sealed barrel with a door in it to load your waste into. The barrel can be rotated on an axel to mix air into it (should be turned every day) and the stuff rots down real quick (in theory). I haven't yet tried it, but have it on my list to build one, if I ever get the time   :)
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

Isn't there also a small-ish green cone that you half bury in the garden that is designed for left over meat and things like that? Sorry, my memory is not entirely reliable on the details.

I know you shouldn't put animal waste in the compost for the vermin reason but I do it in the daleks. If you have an open heap I certainly wouldn't recommend it but it should be OK in a closed unit. Perhaps boiling first might help as well. Living near the sea I sometimes go out and gather up the stuff from the tideline which contains shell debris, crab claws, fish eggs and heaven knows what else. It all goes in the bins and adds all sorts of nutrients that pure garden waste wouldn't.

Yes your right there is one  :) we have one all our cooked waste bones and all go in it, the only thing that seems to slow it down was a dead rat I put in there
In winter they slow down due to lack of warmth from the sun amd they do need to be somewhere sunny in the garden.

http://www.greencone.com             you can get them subsidised from a lot of councils some even install for free ( which means someone else gets to dig the big hole! )

We have a Dalek that we use for kitchen waste - that's vegetable only, no meat etc., and the rats have eaten through the Dalek :(
