ready to give up hope!!
« on: November 09, 2009, 21:13 »
hello ! my big bad girl Selma the araucana bantam is still not laying any eggs and she is aapprox. 34 weeks old and has been squatting for 6 weeks. She appears to be in good condition, seems happy and is not moulting - what on earth is she waiting for? does anyone have a clue - or is it just that she will wait til spring when she gets more daylight?? - i need reassurance pleeeaaaaase :(

I am sure she is fine, I imagine she will now wait until the days start lengthening to start laying, this is quite usual :)

:) Hi , I have very little experience with hens but I would hazard a guess that it is the time of year, and she will probably start laying in spring as you say, unless there are other health problems ?
Good luck with it , there are many with far more experience on here who will be sure to help.

I know how you feel Lucy! I have 2 Araucana girls of 30 weeks, 2 Exchequer Leghorn girls of 33 weeks with not one egg between them yet, and 4LS and 2RIR girls of 28 weeks.  2 of the Light Sussex are laying sporadically!!

Hopefully they will start laying one day!!!   :)

thankyou foxy, judrop and grannieannie!! i feel very relieved -just needed someone to tell me its normal! - was starting to think she might be one of those hens that never end up laying (as my oh keeps reminding me that i persuaded him to get the hens so that they would lay eggs and so far each egg has equated to about £20 each!)   ???

Just be sure she isn't laying elsewhere - found my 35 week old sitting on 29 eggs she'd hidden under the hedge!

Yes I'm sure we've all done it and more than once too (except GrannieAnnie of course who's obviously sewed her pocket up).

I was on my way out to dinner one evening. Put my coat on and found an egg!!
It had been there a few days. Fortunately it was still in one piece.

i got really exited today when i found an egg in the box - i thought perhaps one of my POL (paused to lay :() hens had laid it but then realised that it looks exactly the same as the eggs tracey used to lay before she started to molt! - think it was her but didnt know they laid during a molt - got last egg off her about 3 weeks ago and she is now virtually bald
