chickens and bees stings
« on: April 20, 2009, 12:24 »
Hi all, I wanted to know if anyone has experience of chickens getting stung by bees. one of my bee colonies has turned nasty and when the chickens were near stung one of them quite badly not helped by the fact that she hasn't got as much feather protection as the others due to feather pecking. How do they fare when attacked like this, should I expect the worst?

To all beekeeper hen owners yes I have culled the queen concerned.

I would love to know as well. Just one question for you what type of bees are they? I am hoping to get black bees later this year.

Have to admit, I've been wondering this as the only time my chickens seem to panic is when a bee approaches. (a buzzard overhead the other morning just made them cross)

They are black bees in this hive but all five hives that I have originate from one queen but depending upon what drone mated they appear different in look(colour and temperement). I just looked at the hen again and she looks like she is feeling very sorry for herself. I hope she makes it through we have had enough deaths in the family lately with the loss of one of our silver spotted cats after being hit by a car.

I understand about bees as I have just been on my associations bee-keeping for beginners course.  I blame those Italian Bees.  I hope your chuck is ok.

Roughlee,  In one of my bee books it says that Italians are one of the most docile breeds.... are you being sarcastic or do you know something that you're not telling
