failing with electric fencing
« on: March 21, 2009, 16:46 »
Hi all, have given in to anxiety and purchased poultry netting.  I'm having problems getting it to work, I think it is because i'm having difficulty stopping it sagging and it's touching the ground.  It is on a bit of a slope and the ground is slightly uneven.  Does anyone have any suggestions/ do I need to buy some extra posts/

most of my runs are on sloping, uneven ground. When you say its not working -is it shorting out? Have got it earthed? What sort have you got?
I have a few extra poles, and also have increased tension by tying the corners to metal poles. If it helps I can take some photos

hiya ,if the fencing itself is touching anything other then the plastic posts if it is then this wil stop it from working .

do u have the netting tpye or the strand tpye?

It's netting and it is earthed.  Got a slight shock from it akin to static, so i think it is shorting on the grass because it is sagging - i have spent all afternoon trying to get it upright will try more guy ropes tomorrow.

Don't have experience of it but I know some people put plastic damp proof membrane under the entire length. You can buy a roll from pretty much any DIY store or builders merchant. :)

Unless someone who knows what they're talking about says otherwise.

Thanks, it might come to that.  Any advice from some one who has tried this would be appreciated.

Have you a fence tester?

The fence tester doesn't register any voltage.  At this rate the *****  thing will be in the garage or on E-bay by Wednesday.

Foxy, you asked what type I have bought it is the 1.22m high with black posts that you linked on the post about electric poultry netting.

Dont worry!

Have you got an earthing stake properly connected?

Now to check the energiser -disconnect the lead from the fence and attach the tester directly to the energiser -now it should read at least 6000 v. Once you've identifed the energiser is working you will know there is a serious short somewhere.

Now can you hear it "snicking?" that is where it is shorting.

Is the bottom strand electrified? Normally they are not.

Sometimes the second strand can end up touching the metal stake on a post which goes into the ground (that one in the early days drove me mad!!! :tongue2:)

Have you got a good earth? (ie in deep enough? I water ours periodically if dry)

I have about 4 nets and have the 1.22m one which is the best one, I also have mains and battery fencers on at the mo.

Keep on with the questions we will get it sorted!!! :D

Thanks so much.  have spent all day in bed with a virus so will have to try and sort it later in the week.  I have also realised that I have been sent the larger size mesh so I am going to be delayed waiting for the electric netting people to swap them.  Will try all of your tips and then let you know how I get on.  Thanks again.

Hope you feel better soon and get up and running with the leccy fencing.  :)
TBH I'm soooo glad you're trying first. I'm going to wait until you have success with yours BEFORE buying mine - lol  ::)
