Leeks, no sign
« on: March 09, 2009, 14:15 »
I planted some leek seeds about 2 weeks since, had them in my front room but there is no sign of them, what is the germination time of leeks as i have not planted them before.

Depends on the type. I sowed 2 types the same day and one is an inch tall and the other is just coming through.

I planted 3 varieties in a tray about 3 weeks ago. They are now coming through even though they looked quite spindly/dead. At the moment there are some which are about 1-2 inch tall. Don't know how long I should keep them in the tray before transplanting into a bigger pot?

Mine were slow too OM, theyve only just started to show from 3 weeks ago, much slower than my other cabbages, caulies and others sown at the same time. Think it was mussleburgh (sp?) you got the same ones as me from The Works, so maybe its just those

2 to 3 weeks is quite common for leek germination. If nothing after 3 weeks i would sow some backups. Don't think that heat is particularly beneficial for leeks.
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Have to agree.  Mine aren't showing but a few things planted at the same time are doing well.

Mine were sown last autumn.... now in the cold-frame after moving from a cold greenhouse. Did the same last year - worked perfectly. (Have one row left in the ground from the year before....steadily being harvested :))

They'll make pencil thickness by the time I plant out - July as far as I can remember.... but I'll check the diary before hand.

6 weeks ago, I planted some in our conservatory and some in an unheated greenhouse.  The conservatory ones are about 2" high (these have been moved into greenhouse now), the the greenhouse ones have just started showing.

Keep the faith
