Fruit to grow in half sun
« on: March 07, 2009, 19:58 »
I know that most fruit grows best in full sun but has anyone any experience of growing any in half sun or in the shade??

i was told that raspberries don't mind semi-shade. I've yet to prove the point as only just planted them....so fingers crossed :D

I have 40 canes planted against a large fence. I visited the RHS garden at Rosemoor today and they appeared to be growing all sorts in part shade. Peaches rasperies, blackberries apples and muich more. Seemed to be well established and cropping nicely according to the staff!!

Blackcurrants are reasonably tolerant of shade as well. While most fruits will crop in shade, you really do get the best yield in full sun. But as not all of us have lots of full sun areas, we do the best we can. The only absolutely full sun fruit I allotted was peaches as they simply won't ripen properly in shade.

Raspberries are an edge of forest plant so they should perform for you.

Morello cherries are so tolerant of shade they can be grown on a north wall

Also blackberries and redcurrants
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

If they like your soil, alpine strawberries grow *anywhere*, especially the most inconvenient spots!  They're sweeter in the sun, but ones from the shade are better for cooking with.  My rhubarb does OK in partial shade (it gets shade from about 10-3 in the summer, and longer in the winter).  Blackcurrants crop well in shade, but aren't so sweet, so they're good for jelly or wine but a bit tart raw (I like them, but I eat lemons).

My poundland blackcurrant bush is in part shade, crops well every year (between 6 -10 lbs fruit) without extra feeding and makes excellents sorbets etc. I've planted a couple of it's cuttings this year, given several away and still have 8 young plants in large pots up for grabs if anyone wants them.
