She may have a point, that if everyone downsizes, the economy will have to change in response.  That is an interesting idea, and I'd be quite keen on a well-thought-out op-ed on the subject.

The rest is hopeless blather about how her friends don't understand something that really belongs to a different demographic.  Fine - I don't get the point of nightclubs, myself!  Or lifestyle journalism.

Stripey,
did you see the program on the other day about the relationship between farming and petroleum? It seemed (i wasn't really paying much attention) to be arguing that falling levels of oil will force the sort of shift you are talking about, and the consequences are definitely interesting to think about. There would be a significant rise in the proportion of the population involved in agriculture, presumably, and as a result, changing patterns of settlement - a reversal of urbanisation?

Didn't see it (no telly), but it is something I'm very conscious of.  Particularly, will we be able to sustain things like public education and health services if a significant proportion of the population switch from being taxpaying wage-earners to non-taxpaying gardeners?

my friend came over a few years ago an pointed to a cauilfower growing very well in the ground  her reaction ' i never knew that they grew in the ground  '  maybe just maybe we do actually need more allotments so yes ppl can learn more .
