Brassica collars
« on: April 13, 2009, 21:13 »
Hello,

I currently have 120 brassicas plants (various) that need to be moved to the allotment.  I plant them at home as the pigeons love a picnic at my plot otherwise.  I was wondering...is it necessary to use collars?   If so what is the cheapest way to do it.  I have had a quick scout online and they cost about 10p each which soon starts to add up.   Alternatively I have some long net/mesh covers.  Will these do instead?

Any suggestions welcome.

I use bits of pond liner. Cardboard or anything else that will stay in place and not blow away. The disc shaped ones on sale are fine but square ones work just as well. Cabbage root fly lay their eggs on the soil near to the base of the cabbage plants. The maggot that hatches crawls down into the soil and eats the roots. The roots can be completely destroyed if there are many of them.

With the collar in place the eggs are layed on the collar and the maggot cannot get into the soil and dies.
