could I make this into a hen house?
« on: June 08, 2008, 15:33 »
My mum has one of these, and wondered if it could be made into a hen house, maybe make a pop hole on the  solid side? Its lockable too,  and  a darn site cheeper than a eglu cube, easy to clean, lockable, the only thing I could think would be a problem would be not warm enough in the winter.

what d'you think, good idea or stupid idea?

Ooh I also ment to say that its alot bigger than it looks. :)

We wondered about those. Don't see shy it wouldn't be warm enough for winter. You'd need a fair bit of ventilation around the top with mesh siliconed (?) or screwed in place.

Worth a discussion.
Only worry is if it would be weatherproof by the time you've stuck a load of holes in it. Might need a bit of an overhang on the roof to keep driving rain out.

I have one of these (for its intended purpose) and I'm not impressed. Fairly flimsy and the doors are dropping off after only a year. Mine was from B and Q so maybe the quality would be better with a different brand but I think you would be better paying a bit more for better quality and will be cheaper in the long run.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

I wondered about the rain and wind but mum keeps all her soil and stuff in hers and assures me it stays bone dry, she was so impressed with it that she now has two.

Not many real 'bargains' about it seems. You do get what you pay for or DIY and you know what you've got  :)

I did consider building henhouses as a sideline but the timber is so expensive and shipping is always a problem.

I use one for my ducks and it's been fantastic

I added ventilation holes on the side put a piece of wood along the front to stop sawdust blowing out

The added advantage for me is I can hose it down and it drys really quickly with the ducks throwing water everywhere it's fab

What's it like in hot weather, Vember?  Does it not get 'sweaty'?
Nobody said this was going to be easy ... but some days are better than others!

No it's been fine during the hot weather:)

The holes I put on the sides help greatly

The ducks outside before it get's too hot and I leave the door open all day, suppose the only problem for hens is when they go in to lay  :?
Wouldn't be too bad as long as the door was left open.

We had one as a garden store... when it was windy it blew around the garden, despite having a lawnmower and other things in it... perhaps ok if some form of "pegging down"?
