New Hen House - more decisions to make
« on: May 24, 2010, 06:12 »
Still got loads to look at but this is more of a general obversation question.

If we take two options and
a) 1.2 x .8m with 1 nest box
b) 1.4 x .8m with 2 nest boxes (30% dearer)

I'm thinking the extra .2m is not much difference so how much value is that extra nest box?

Looking at it mathematically (avoiding the tricky subject of how many hens can it hold :))
for the same money, roughly,  you can have 4 of option a) or 3 of option b).

Which would you go for?

the general rule is that you need one nest box for three hens but all of mine use just two nest boxes and I have far more than 6 hens - with the exception of my amberlink who lays on top of the tumble dryer everyday
Staffies are softer than you think.

ROFL

So I guess every time it comes down to how many you feel you want to put in the coop and it's probabaly not worth paying 30% more for an extra .2m plus another nestbox unless you intend to pack them in really tight, which I don't.

sorted then
It is cheaper and you would have got more for your money if you had bought a shed - but you will know that for when you increase your flock - I add a few every year just to keep the egg supply up as the older ones ease up over winter. Although next year I will just be adding guinea fowl instead (apparently good meat and good eggs  :D)

Sadly a shed is a no no for the moment as I need planning consent, but arks and coops are fine.

Hi a shed is a shed if you cant move it  put it on skids and it becomes a moveable coop - which in theory can be towed by a tractor, which is permitted on agricultural land, we have 5 like this the planning officer even got on his knees to make sure they were moveable

Glad you are still carrying on dont let those miserable b*ggers around you win.

when we had a shed we put it on wheels so it could simply be pushed around  :)

Thta's not quite right.

Portable buildings are permitted development of Class A agricultural land which is 13 acres upwards.  On less acreages you still need permission, portable or not.

No doubt some-one will correct me if I have it wrong :)

You could buy a wooden bike store... cheaper than a coop, but around the same size.  Easy access for cleaning, wouldn't need too much modification, and not as high as a shed, so would stay warmer in winter ;)

I have just bought a similar thing to what Casey76 has just advised - it is a wooden tool store (didn't go for the cheapest but a good sturdy version). It has 2 doors on one side one of which has two bolts insude and then a hasp on the outside. Grannie Annies OH Brian is making me an external nest box and also putting in a pop hole for me  :D. This will be home for my sablepoots and will have a large covered run (they need to be kept undercover in poor weather) so the double doors will be on the outside to make it easier for me to clean  :)

Getting a bit bored of this now have tried to give advice several times only to have  it thrown back have been doing this for 6 years now have had planning officers around  regularly, and its 12 acres not 13 by all the posts you write you dont seen to know much about anything , and who wants a load of dogs on agricultural land no wonder the neighbours moan.

Hey - why the aggression.  It's actually 12 and a 1/3 acres (5 hectares) but that wasn't the point.

It's just that people were kind enough to make suggestions and it's only right to say WHY I can't put a shed up.

I wasn't throwing it back in your face.   I'm sorry if you think I was.

I did actually ring the planning officer to double check, not that that always guarantees the right answer :)
