Frost Damage - Anything I can do ?
« on: May 21, 2008, 08:48 »
Went down to the lottie this morning and found all my potatoes had been hit by yesterdays frost :(
Most of the leaves are black especially my maincrop which have only just come through, do I leave the blackened leaves on  :?:
Out of the south cometh the whirlwind....out of the north the cold!

Rightly or wrongtly, I'm just going to leave mine on to dry off naturally, rather than cut or pull away.

The tubers should still manage to send up fresh shoots.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I think I'd take DD's advice and don't touch,  you could introduce disease into broken stems.

I think DD's been growing spuds for more than a year or two

Could this be what is wrong with mine.  They're sort of different shades of yellow-brown-black?

Thanks

Could well be Lee. Whereabouts are you? - would be useful if you could pop it in your profile.

As you're not basking in the tropical south, it's quite likely you've got 'a touch of frost', although not all northern areas had it.
