Frost damage
« on: February 05, 2011, 18:31 »
Hi all
I'm new to this forum and am hoping for some advice.  I planted some winter onions in October but since the snow and frost over Christmas the bulbs are now very soft.  Are they likely to recover or should I take them up and start again?
Any suggestions gratefully recieved!!

It aint good practice to dig up your future crops just to see how they are getting on! :nowink:

I suggest you leave them alone and if you are really miffed, buy more sets and pop them in pots to replace any in the ground that have succumbed.  Or try onion seeds.    Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I would bow to more expert knowledge but in my experience if they have gone soft now I don't think they would firm up.

Of course depends on definition of 'soft'

If you have space I think I would go with Kleftiwallah's advice and get some seed or sets.

If you haven't got space and are that concerned, frankly I would ditch them.  Dispose of completely rather than putting on a compost heap as if they dont rot down quickly they may attract onion fly in to the area later on.

Unless otherwise stated it can be assumed ALL posts are by Pa Snip

Have they actually sprouted, or sat there done nothing and gone soft?

You won't actually be able to replace like for like as the sets in the shops now are for spring-planting, which will be soon and they are better storers anyway.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
