Is it Asparagus????
« on: May 02, 2008, 22:48 »
My mum has a plant growing in her garden that looks to me very much like asparagus, but she thinks it is gypsophila. Does anyone know if gypsophila looks like asparagus spears as it first comes up? She has had the plant for a few years and if it is asparagus she has told me that i can take it for my allotment as she is moving. I dont really want to take it if it isnt asparagus......I will try to get a photo and maybe it would be eaiser for someone the recognise.

Thank you so much DD, you have 100% confirmed that it is asparagus, she never picks it and it looks exactly like your picture. Do you think it will survive if i dig it up and transplant it at my allotment?

Not mine - but very similar. The 'ferns' will grow to 6' plus.

Re the asparagus bed, I don't know where you're thinking of, or I may have forgotten!

I don't know what muntjac is saying, but, yes, you can transplant Asparagus, do it in dormant season, Nov/Dec till March and trim  roots with a clear cut before planting. Have the bed ready in advance and bury the roots well from frosts.

Munty is saying, (as only he can), to split the crowns using the back to back fork method.

I think.

Was going to put my asparagus bed next to my little shed, but dont fancy sitting drinking tea in the shade of a 6ft jungle
Will have to change the 'plan' and move it down the lotty a bit (when they are big enough to plant out)
