I dug out a deep bed about a month ago, nothing was green and above ground within at least a metre, anything that had been,  had been beheaded , stamped on and at least mostly dug up.

I filled the bed with new compost 2 weeks ago, theres now a thick lattice of inch thick weed roots running through it.

is this normal?
I just cant accept that something can grow this fast and we didnt evolve to eat it.

What can I say?  I've had the same experience.  Prepared my trench for runner beans a while back.  Lots of muck, (clean) compost and, until earlier this week, all was fine.  Now, where the...@#!* have they come from?!?  How, why?  

Let's hope that the soil that's been so kind to the weeds will feed the runner beans when they go out next month!

it's because it's turned over, cultivated or rotovated.
