Modern peas only grow to approx 2 foot as during the war there was a shortage of pea sticks so they were developed to grow short. You can still get some tall varieties in heritage ranges, I grew ne plus ultra last year and they did well. You do still get a good crop from the modern varieties even though they are smaller.
