I would like to grow some small ones for making whole pickles, I would like some suggestions for a good variety to grow - we have an unheated greenhouse and need something quite reliable as we are new to allomenting.

I love those too. I haven't tried them yet but I bought some gherkin seeds as the pickled cucumbers I like (Mrs Elswoods haimishe) are gherkins.

I'm not familiar with UK varieties, but you'd need to look for a specific pickling variety which are shorter, more bristly and drier inside than standard table types like Marketmore, Sweet Slice, etc. Even small the aforementioned don't make very good pickles, so write or email some seed companies for their specific variety names you could order.
