Starting off carrots and parsnips in a greenhouse
« on: February 13, 2017, 13:35 »
Hi
Can anyone tell me what time of year and how long it takes to start the above off in a greenhouse. Also I may do lettuce and radishes the same way.
Thank you very much
J

Sure can Logi.
For a cold greenhouse near the South coast

2014   Early Nantes carrots sown 4 feb under cloche in ghse border ......germinated 21 Feb/watch out for slugs....first harvest 29 May. Thinking of putting mine in this week now the cold spell has gone.
2014   White gem parsnips sown 8 March in paper pots in cold ghse..........germinated 27 March .and planted out immediately...... first harvest September

Parsnips can be fussy even in a cold greenhouse if there isn't a fair bit of sunshine, so now I sow in paper pots at the end of March. They germinate a week quicker and start harvesting at the same time.

Whereabouts in the country are you, Logi?  If you could add it to your forum profile it will help us as conditions on the South Coast will be very different from the bleak north of Scotland!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Radishes are fine in a cold border here in Reading, and lettuce I sow in pots and then plant out small plants in the border

If you're going to transplant the seedlings to an outdoor site, then I wouldn't sow them indoors as the roots suffer from transplanting and you end up with stunted carrots and parsnips.  I always grow in situ and have always had great results, much to my fellow allotmenteers disgust!
