What can I feed my chooks?
« on: January 09, 2008, 18:00 »
I know, I'm a pest.  But I'm clearing out my cupboards and have come across bits and bobs from DH's (Darling Husband) last year's health kick.  I was wondering if I could feed them to my chooks as there is no way on earth DH is going to eat them!

Kidney beans
Lentils
Rice
Chick peas

Cheers peeps

As long as you soak them and cook them to the right timing especially the kidney beans i would have thought they would love them

If you're new to chicken keeping Poogle, I'd advise you to stick to chicken feed (layers pellets) ad lib.  Once they have settled in and you have got used to them you can give them a few treats in the afternoon.  View it as giving treats to children - not too much and only after dinner

Nothing salty or sugary - a big NO NO NO !!!

Give fresh greens every day (graising on grass is their favourite) but mine like loads of other greens too. Give them mixed corn (a hand full each) about an hour or so before bed time to give them warmth through the night.

If you give too much non-chicken food they will become unhealthy and you won't know why or how to cure it

I did try last year while supporting DH on said health kick.
I think I'd rather eat my own limbs, at least they would taste of something

Chooks have layers mash at daybreak, a few bits of cabbage, pasta etc leftover from last nights tea, then a handful of mixed corn at about 4pm, just before they retire to bed.

Is this ok?

Kidney beans - put in a chilli
Lentils - in a curry
Rice - goes with everything
Chick peas - in veggy curry or make into hoummous

I tend to use pellets as they make less mess but mash is OK as long as it's moistened.

Mine have pellet feed available all day in their run not just at daybreak.  I don't give any treats through the winter as feeding time is short and they are still laying, they need the best nutrition possible, and that's not pasta.

I do give them a few treats in the summer like spaghetti but more for my fun that for their health

I bought mash as it was recommended as a means of keeping them occupied.  I'm learning what a mess it makes.

Unfortunately it's a 25kg bag so it will be around for a good while yet (especially once they have the run of the garden) but after that it's pellets!!

It's moistened, alright.  It's done nobbut rain every day since my chooks arrived!  But I'm confused, Aunt Sal - on another thread you said it's ok to give the mash dry.  I don't want to get it wrong! :D

Was that quite an old thread ?  Munty advised me always to moisten it.  5 of mash to 3 of water.  Chaged every day.  Hes said that dry mash can give them breathing problems.
