I use a pencil (2B is best) on the white plastic labels. Doesn't come off unless you use a rubber.

4 pint plastic milk bottles are great for labels.

Cut them arrow headed ar one end and stick in the pots.

Use the other half as a mini cloche.

My shelf/bench collapsed & deposited all my well labelled tomato seedlings in a mixed up heap on the floor with said shelf on top This year I was very careful about labelling them.
