Growing fruit bushes in containers
« on: May 12, 2013, 16:48 »
Hi all.
While forum lurking and reading posts most of the day ive had an idea, and yes i now have a headache too. (didnt want to hijack anyones thread so i thought i would start a new one)

My plot is quite long and steep and the idea is to grow a variety of fruit bushes all along the side of the plot between me and my plot neighbor. As ive read that they like to travel and that they favor certain types of soil im wondering if i could grow them in containers (big pots i guess?) so as to keep them from rambling.

Would this be plausible? Im thinking about growing as many different types as possible.

Thanks.

Ours are all in the ground, we have defined beds rather than raised and the rule is they stay in their own beds. I tell the raspberries that multiple times a day.

I suppose you could grow them in pots but would they get enough food, water to keep up.
Can you not do the pot idea at home instead

I suppose i could build defined or even raised beds for them along the side of the plot, and i am worried about the food and water they will get and im also worried about the different soil requirements but at home isnt the ideal place for them, its gonna have to be the allotment.

I can't seem to get pics off photo bucket onto here using the iPad otherwise I would post pics of ours in defined beds.

To get pictures up with an iOS device you will need to use instagram not photobucket.

You can keep them in containers, I've got 5 year old blackcurrants in pots. But they won't fruit as heavily. Currants and gooseberries are easy to keep in check - I find it's raspberries that like a good wander.

I have blueberry bushes in half barrel plastic containers buried in the soil. The reason is that I have filled them with ericaceous compost to give them the correct growing conditions - they are only two year old bushes but they are growing well. I do water them from time to time as they get a bit on the dry side. I would say that my Blackcurrant and Raspberry canes growing direct into the ground grow better though...
