A carrot question
« on: October 04, 2011, 18:07 »
Hello, I am looking to see if anybody can help me?
This is my first attempt at growing carrots and as the ground in our allotment is of very poor quality, full of stones and clay, I thought tubs in the backgarden would do the trick.
I harvested a few today for tea and have found nearly everyone of them has a ring of black near the tip end - the rest of the carrot is fine!
So what is this, why does this happen and how can I stop it happening again next year?

Sounds like a low-level infestation of carrot fly. Fleece/enviromesh them, up put the tub up at 24" or more.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'm wondering if, as they are grown in containers ,did you have enough drainage in the bottom.  If not this could be the cause and it may be the start of rot at the bottom

It does sound rather unusual, surely, to have carrot root fly damage at the bottom of the carrot but not nearer the top - when the fly arrives via the surface?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks everyone, didn't think it could be carrot fly as the tops are fine, however will bear this in mind next year and cover with fleece :)
