Dear fellow gardeners,

I am a newbie on the vegetable garden and I am thinking of growing potatoes variety king Edward. When do I need to put them in the ground and can I use potato bags for that as well and what are the pitfalls?
Your advice is much appreciated

It is possible to grow potatoes in containers but it's too late in the year now to start them off.

Potatoes are divided, essentially, into three categories: first early, second early, and maincrop. If you planted them all on the same day, the first earlies are ready first and so on. 

King Edward is a late maincrop variety, which takes 22 - 24 weeks from planting of the tubers to being ready.

It's true you can try to grow potatoes for December, but be aware that if you grow them in the ground and have decent frosts, the frosts will kill them off. Most people who try to grow these late potatoes put them in containers and then move them under cover.

The varieties grown at this time are generally also the first and second earlies (so they are ready sooner than maincrop). Most - but not all - of those varieties are more waxy (like salad potatoes) and so not great for mash / roast. 

But others may have better ideas about these varieties than I do.
