Newbie needs help with seed potatoes
« on: April 11, 2012, 20:35 »
Hi Guys, newbie here with first allotment plot (which is in the process of being cleared).

I've been looking at seed potatoes at the garden centre and see that you can buy them in bags of 5 or more, which is confusing me a bit  ???

Just how many potatoes would one get from 5 seed potatoes, roughly?

Sorry if this has been answered before on here.

Jim

Anything between two and ten ! !

I have heard that if you want fewer but bigger spuds just leave one shoot on your seed spud.   If you want more, but smaller spuds, leave all the shoots on.      Cheers,     Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

2Kg of bought 1st early seed potatoes will total 20 - 30 tubers. Between 1 & 3 mature plants will provide a meal for 2 people (depends on breed and conditions). Second early and main-crop seed potatoes will/can provide a more productive harvest.

Hello Jim, I'm still a bit of a rookie myself, but have grown potatoes last two years.
For first and second earlies I would expect around 10 -15 small (not pea size I hope)potatoes from each seed. But suppose depends on conditions. 5 plants would take up around 5ft in length, so put as many in as you can fit into the area and want to eat. I am staggering the planting of first earlies and second earlies more apart this year, so I can enjoy them for longer.

Hope this helps a bit.

Last year I planted 10 tubers each of 1st earlies and 2nd earlies.

The varieties were Tuskar and Edgecote Purple respectively.

I harvested 8.15 kg of Tuskar and 14.12 kg of Edgecote Purple.

This should give you a good idea of what to expect.

The Edgecote Purple were the better tasting potato, although neither were good as boiled. This year I am growing Lady Christl and British Queen.

Personally I would plant all potatoes at the same time - 1or 2weeks ago, but around now is fine.  It is just that first earlies mature first, followed by second earlies, then finally maincrop.  You should not stagger the planting.  They will take the same length of time to mature.
