got started on lot - dug 2 beds for winter onions - advice welcome

Got plot last Sat.

Have cleared most of couch grass and made 2 weed and root (mainly) free 4 foot by 15 foot beds which I want to devote to winter onions - one red, one white.

Apart from spacing, netting and depth any tips?

What works for you personally? have heard of starting them off in a couple of weeks from troughs and letting roots/shoots develop before planting now or just planting them straight in and when planting, planting amongst coffee grounds or chicken poo.

Any theories, tips and advice welcome.

Do you need that many onions?

Bear in mind that winter ones a normally used as a "filler" whilst you're waiting for you spring planted ones to mature. They are not good storers and you'll generally start using them around June and not expect them to last beyond September.

You could well be looking at 240 plus onions to use in 90 days and your beds will be tied up come spring.

I'd be tempted to consider halving your allocated space.

I have only planted winter Onion for the first time this year but have put them directly in the ground. Agree with DD think again about how many you are going to plant. Good luck

As regards planting, I agree - no messing about, straight in.

I feed in spring when they really start to grow, rather than at planting time as the nutrients will leech out of the soil over winter.
